ANALYSIS AND FORECASTING OF RICE PRODUCTION BEHAVIOR IN BANGLADESH

Authors: Rehana Parvin
Published: 2022-December-15

This research looks at how numerous factors, including the price of rice, area, improved seed distribution, areas irrigated by different improved methods, and fertilizer, influence rice production in Bangladesh. This study employed the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to investigate the short-run and long-run effects of each exogenous variable on rice production. In this research work, auto regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and hybrid ARIMA-GRACH (general autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic) were used to forecast rice production in Bangladesh from 1983 to 2030. The parameters of price of rice, area irrigated by different improved methods, area, and fertilizer were found to have a significant and positive impact on rice production in this study, both in the short run and the long run, according to the ARDL model. According to the lowest Root Mean Squared Error, Mean Absolute Error and Theil Inequality Coefficient criteria, the linear hybrid ARIMA (11, 1, 11)–EGARCH (1, 1)–M model performed better in predicting the rice production in Bangladesh.

Authors: Mallika De, Saiyeda Asea Asha
Published: 2022-December-15

The aim of the present study was to adapt a ‘Health-Specific Self-Efficacy Scales (HSSES)’ for use in Bangladesh. For this purpose, 155 respondents (age range 18 to 42 years) were selected using convenient sampling technique from different departments (students, faculties and stuff) of IUBAT University. The scales were adapted following five steps such as ensuring construct equivalence, forward translation, focus group discussion, back translation as well as a pilot study. The findings demonstrated that the Bangla Version of 'Health-Specific Self-Efficacy Scales' has sound reliability [Cronbach Alpha 0.79 (‘Nutrition Self-Efficacy (NSE)’ 0.84, ‘Physical Exercise Self-efficacy (PESE)’ 0.76,‘Alcohol Resistance Self-efficacy (ARSE)’ 0.82), Split-half reliability 0.73 (Spearman-Brown) and 0.76 (Guttman method), test-retest reliability 0.67] and satisfactory validity. These results exhibit that Health-Specific Self-Efficacy Scales (‘NSE’, ‘PESE’ and ‘ARSE’) are reliable and valid instruments for assessing nutrition, physical exercise and alcohol resistance related self believes as well as health consciousness. Furthermore, this study uncovers the opportunity for further health-related research projects in Bangladesh.

EXAMINING THE NEXUS BETWEEN EXTERNAL DEBT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN BANGLADESH: AN ARDL-ECM APPROACH

Authors: Imtiaz Ahmed, Mobasshir Anjum, Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Sahabuddin Ahmed Seikdear
Published: 2022-December-15

This paper aims to examine the nexus between external debt and economic growth in Bangladesh for periods ranging from 1973 to 2019. Time-series econometric techniques of Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model (ARDL) and Error Correction Method (ECM) are utilized in empirical analysis to investigate whether shortrun and long-run dynamics exist between external debt and the growth of Bangladesh. Findings derived from the analysis reveal a long-run association between external debt and Bangladesh's economic growth. The error correction method also points out long-run adjustment if any disequilibrium arises in a period in the short run. The study recommends maintaining a stable position of overseas debt and ensuring compatible investment conditions for domestic and foreign investors.

SIN AND PUNISHMENT IN THE SCARLET LETTER: A FEMINIST PERSPECTIVE

Authors: Sheikh Saifullah Ahmed and Kazi Imran Hossain
Published: 2022-December-15

In this article, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, which is set in the Puritan society of Boston in the middle of the seventeenth century, is subjected to a close and in-depth analysis. Within the realm of feminist studies, one of the most important topics to discuss is the way in which female characters are portrayed in works of fiction. The female protagonist of the novel is Hester Prynne whose sin and receiving punishment and, therefore, her self-development without being reliant on her male counterparts for livelihood, with ups and downs in the patriarchal society and being ostracized are taken into account for this study. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that the narrative does not adhere to the antiquated norms of patriarchal heritage in its depiction of women; rather, it is a protest against the constraints that society places on women at the time it was written. A qualitative content analysis method is adopted to investigate the representation of female characters in this narrative. The portrayal of Hester Prynne and Pearl is explored through the lens of feminist stance for the possibility that it challenges conventional practices. It clarifies the author’s stance in the patriarchal setting. Thus, this study conducts a rigorous analysis of the traditional patriarchal and stereotypical portrayals of the woman in literature and suggests reconsideration of the long-held patriarchal practices of representing women in fiction.

Authors: Rajib Lochan Das, Khandoker Saif Uddin
Published: 2022-December-15

Looking for an effective teaching method to ensure better learning of students is a common and longstanding phenomenon. Several learning theories evolved over the course of time. The constructivist approach to teaching learning is often found as an effective one that runs in a student-centered environment where participatory and active learning is nurtured. In this case study, the constructivist approach was employed in teaching discrete mathematics to Bachelor of Computer Science and engineering students at a non-government university in Bangladesh. The study was quasi-experimental involving a non-probability convenient sampling technique. A total of 372 students were invited to attend pre- and post-tests in online mode on each of the 6 chapters throughout the four consecutive semesters. Attending each of the tests was not a mandatory requirement of the students for the course. Collected scores from the 12 tests were statistically analysed to draw a meaningful conclusion based on the discussions over the analyses of findings. Limitations, implications, and direction to future research are also brought up. The results of this study will help the institutional authority, teachers, and students to make an effective plan by adopting constructivist teaching learning not only for mathematics education but also for other similar subjects.
